UPDATE: Model United Nations in 2020-2022

Covid-19 Update and Current Plans

The March 2020 National Model United Nations (NMUN) international conference in New York City was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and we received a full refund. We are rolling over all donations to 2020-2021 and/or 2021-2022 academic years. As of now, we plan on attending the NMUN conference in New York in March 2021 whether it is in-person or virtual. More details about NMUN and their contingency plans can be found here. NMUN will be following the plans of the United Nations headquarters in New York City. We appreciate your continued support!

What It Costs and How You Can Help!

The cost per student to attend an in-person NMUN conference ranges from $900-$1,300, and includes travel expenses and hotel accommodations for 5 days in New York City, conference registration, briefings with Permanent Offices to the U.N. or other U.S. offices, business cards and other professional supplies, and the opportunity to and exciting field trip opportunities. To ensure that cost is not a barrier, each student pays $150. Student Senate provides some budgetary support, but corporate and individual donations are needed to make up the difference.

By making a gift, you will help ensure this high-impact learning experience becomes a reality for a Stockton student! They'll develop skills that will directly impact their professional and personal lives, make lasting connections with professionals and peers around the world, and expand the possibilities that await them after graduation. And when you make your gift, you'll receive a special thank you from a Model UN student.

Who We Are

Stockton Model UN was founded in 2012 and recruits from across the campus. We are proud that our students represent every single school at Stockton, from Biology, Health Sciences, Business, Hotel Management, Criminal Justice, Political Science, History, Computer Science, and many more. Our groups is also one of the most diverse in terms of gender, race/ethnicity, country of origin, and political views: all are welcome! Our program emphasizes learning, and we strive for excellence in achieving the individual goals our students set for their experience. Some students work on communication skills and public speaking, while others focus on learning to write policy. Others learn how to apply their disciplinary knowledge, and some want to improve their writing. Whatever their goals, our program supports individual success. This has translated into success for the entire program, as evidenced by our multiple awards.

You can read more about our program here!

"Model UN taught me that the global issues aren’t always black and white, there will always be a disparity in the implementation of agreements among developed and developing states. But as we continue to address the willingness of humanity to acknowledge overlapping desire for preventing the spread of violence and oppression, we can take one closer step to eventual compliance for all, one SDG at a time",

David Yoon '17, Alumni & Delegate at NMUN NY 2015, NY 2016, Japan 2016

In 2016, David and 7 other students earned multiple top awards for representing the United Kingdom at a conference in Kobe, Japan.

What is Model UN?

Model UN is a simulation of global policy making through the UN system, where students:

  • Represent sovereign countries

  • Research their assigned country and assigned topics

  • Write policy papers that identify creative solutions to global challenges

  • Prepare and deliver formal diplomatic speeches

  • Collaborate for 3-5 days with delegates from more than 126 countries

  • Draft and vote on UN resolutions based on real world challenges and crises.

Our students become skilled in deliberative dialogue and constructive debate to address complex issues with people from a variety of backgrounds, interests, and perspectives. These are life-long skills required to be an effective and engaged citizen.

In 2018, Stockton partnered with 10 students from Japan on a joint team representing Austria. We hosted our Japanese partners on campus for training during spring break.

Model UN in New York Spring 2019
We sent our largest delegation ever to New York in 2019, earning several awards for representing China on 22 different UN committees.
Our students represented China and Brazil at a 2018 conference in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, earning a total of 7 awards.

We spend most of our time at conferences writing resolutions and negotiating with other countries to adopt the best solutions for global challenges we face today!
